Ueno is a historical and cultural center of Tokyo; it is also where the famous Ueno Onshi Park (commonly known as Ueno Park) located. Around Ueno Park, there are numerous art and cultural facilities such as museums, art galleries, university campuses and zoos. Ueno is an area with a long history as Shogun Tokugawa established the magnificent family temple there in the 17th century and settled there ever since then.
Ueno Park is also a well known spot for cherry blossom viewing; many people would come to this park in spring for this traditional activity. There is also autumn-leaf viewing in the fall.

Kan’ei’ji was destroyed in a fire in the late 19th century during the Boshin War; the ruins of Kan’ei’ji is where Ueno Park now located (part of Kan’ei’ji was remained). Afterwards with the opening of Ueno Station, Ueno became the gate of the North of Tokyo. Many department stores began to establish in the area, making Ueno even livelier than ever.
There are world class cultural and art facilities surrounding Ueno Park, such as Ueno Zoo, Tokyo National Museum, National Museum of Western Art, Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo University, Tokyo University of the Arts and Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. Because of this geographical background, this area has been home to many prominent scholars and artists from long ago.
Ueno Station is the gate to the northern part of the city. It is a transportation hub which houses JR Yamanote Line, Tohoku-Hon Line, JR Joban Line, Tokyo Metro Ginza Line and Hibiya Line, Toei Subway Oedo Line, Tohoku Joetsu Nagano Shinkansen, and Keisei Sky Liner.
